Logline

A fake-woke mom in Texas must join a support group for parents of LGBTQ+ kids or lose her company — a chain of queer-positive gyms.

Synopsis

AINSLEY is the straight, super-woke CEO of a national chain of queer-positive gyms. But when her daughter, JENNA, publicly comes out as pansexual, Ainsley freaks out - terrified for her daughter’s safety. Unfortunately, this is live-streamed, and now Ainsley’s business model is fucked. In contrast, CHUCK is already an a-hole. But he loves his “son” ROCKY, a former marine. When Chuck walks in on a terrified Rocky dressed as a woman, he laughs it off as “dressing up,” but Rocky’s mom knows that Rocky is trans. She’s done with Chuck pretending he doesn’t know.

Ainsley and Chuck reluctantly attend FLAGS – a support group for parents of queer kids led by annoyingly energetic nonbinary counselor SLOANE. This six-month class is filled with other struggling parents: a devout Latino catholic, unable to attend his gay son’s wedding without jeopardizing both their souls; Ainsley’s head of PR, who wants her queer son to wear Wranglers like the other boys; a Black former athlete who doesn’t want his lesbian daughter to face more prejudice than she has to; and an 80-year-old granny who needs to understand what it means that her grandson is intersex. Sloane puts their class of misfits through a rigorous program designed to force these parents to do one thing: push through their fear to get to a wholehearted affirmation of their kids and march in a pride parade.

This ain't California, y'all, this is Texas! Set in the present-day suburbs of Houston, Texas, FLAGS is a film of dichotomies. Rednecks and people of color are neighbors,  churches with contrasting views are across the street from each other, and rainbows clash with the red, white, and blue.  A state that is home to one of the country's largest LGBTQ+ populations, but drag queens are vilified. BBQ joints, the Houston Astros, and a big-ass Texas flag establish a sense of place. FLAGS pokes fun at ignorance while embracing scared parents as bigoted beliefs are dismantled one by one. This film is approachable for parents but will not cut them any slack because their kids are counting on them. If comedy comes from pain, then FLAGS serves up a feast of both.

FLAGS gets its comedy from truthful reactions of parents fighting their fears to embrace their kids but is grounded in the heartbreaking moments of the pain they cause. A queer-themed gym provides the support group's location for a fish-out-of-water humor, contrasting with the blue-collar world of a plumbing supply company. A high school allows us to experience how these teens get both support and shit from their peers, and a sports bar is a place where love for the Houston Astros melds people regardless of their ideologies.

AINSLEY

CHUCK

(50s) Redneck who dresses like Larry the Cable Guy in his trucker hat and Astros jersey with the sleeves cut off. Chuck owns and runs a plumbing supply company with his wife and adult "son," ROCKY. Chuck loves nothing more than grabbing a beer with Rocky to watch a game or hitting the gun range together. His universe crashes like a pickup truck into a drag show when he finds out Rocky is trans. Only the threat of his wife kicking his ass to the curb gets him to attend FLAGS. Chuck has to let go of lifelong prejudices and possibly friendships if he wants a relationship with his daughter. Chuck's journey shows us that if this guy can change, anyone can.

SLOANE

(30-40s) SLOANE, Nonbinary, owns three PRIDE Fitness locations but most importantly, they are the overly enthusiastic leader of the support group, FLAGS .  A trained counselor who is part cheerleader, part motivator, and part kick-ass trainer. They won’t give up until these parents push through their fears to give their kids the affirmation they desperately need -- "We're saving lives here, people!" But Sloane hides a shameful secret -- they are unable to transform their own parents. Sloane's awakening happens when they  learn to affirm themself and discover that found family is a beautiful thing.

JENNA

(16-18) Daughter of Ainsley who feels insignificant compared to her mom's company. A late bloomer, Jenna thinks coming out as Pansexual will bring her and her mom closer... but her mom rejects her! Why? She didn't expect anyone to roll out a rainbow carpet for her... actually, she kind of did. When she goes back to school, kids she has known her whole life suddenly treat her like she reeks of Eau de Pansexual. Bye-bye cis-het privilege. Jenna joins GLOW (Gay, Lesbian, Or Whatever), a teen group at school, to navigate her coming out. But the best part is when  Jenna finds romance in the group. Jenna faces what many LGBTQ+ teens face, a parent who isn't outright hostile, but who is far from wholeheartedly affirming.

Themes

Acceptance

Acceptance of self, each other, and circumstance.

Affirmation

The parents must move from denial, through fear to reach wholehearted affirmation of their kids.

Fear

When we fear the judgment, the unknown, and our own shadows we are controlled by them. There are consequences to fear-based decisions. When we accept, embrace, and move past fear then we can truly find freedom.

Family

The one we are born into, and the one we find.

Community

When we gather with neighbors in person, we have a greater chance of finding common ground.

Love

Love does not seek to change you. It accepts and embraces you. It also inspires you to evolve and become the best version of yourself.

WHY ME?
During university I slowly came out to friends and family. My mom allowed her fears to take precendence over this very momentous and scary time in my life. It has taken time, patience, and open to dialogue for her to realize that I was going to be ok but that I just needed her to be supportive.

WHY ME? I thought I was an LGBTQ ally, but when my daughters came out, I fucked up. I hurt them more than the “other people” I was scared would hurt them. I can never take that back.
